BANGKOK – Muangthong United have strengthened their arsenal ahead of Saturday’s 2010 AFC Champions League play-off against Da Nang with the signing of former Bayern Munich and 1860 Munich striker Berkant Goktan.
The 28-year-old has joined Muangthong on a one-year contract and the Thailand Premier League champions are hoping his considerable experience playing for clubs in Germany and Turkey will benefit the ambitious Bangkok-based club as they look to qualify for Asia’s premier club competition as well as successfully defend their domestic title.
Once considered one of German football’s most promising talents, Goktan made his professional debut for Bayern Munich at the age of 17 before having loan spells at Borussia Monchengladbach and Arminia Bielefeld prior to his move to Turkey where he played for Galatasaray and Besiktas.
Gotkan returned to Germany firstly with Kaiserslautern and then with 1860 Munich where he became a firm favourite with the fans of Die Löwen (The Lions), scoring 18 goals in 32 matches before his time at the Allianz Arena came to a premature end in 2008 after he tested positive for a banned substance.
